Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely escaped winter in Manassas just yet. Mother Nature has provided us with a few nice days, but she’s always ready to remind us that she’s in charge. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call us for out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall could bury your air conditioner in the snow, diminishing its performance when the temperatures begin to warm up for the season. Not to mention it can hinder a high-efficiency system from performing as such. The situation could become an even bigger problem too if you don’t plan for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are things you can do as a homeowner to help your air conditioner work as it should even though snow has fallen or could fall in the approaching days and weeks.

  1. Maintain a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Walk around the area regularly to ensure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that may have accumulated during the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, covering your air conditioner could end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner may be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, leading to damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Manassas will probably go up and down over the last few days of colder temperatures, you can’t count out the possibility of weather that can change the performance of your air conditioner. At Woody's Sudden Service Inc in Manassas, we are always available to check any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re about air conditioner service or buying a new system.
